The history of the appearance of the title "City of Military Glory"

The history of Russia includes more than three dozen wars in which the people showed courage, perseverance and devotion to the state. Left a big mark on modern history Great Patriotic War which ended with the victory of the Red Army. During the fighting, many cities were completely destroyed, requiring complete restoration. In 2006, the Russian government adopted a bill introducing the title “City of Military Glory.” Do not confuse GVS with “Hero City”; the title is issued according to other criteria.

Hero City is equipped with a special platform for the installation of a memorial stele, topped with the coat of arms of the Russian Federation, inserts with the text of the decree and the coat of arms of the city. The President has the authority to sign the title "City of Military Glory". Currently, 45 cities have received this title. The event is repeated annually and is accompanied by celebrations and fireworks. Along with the title, regional awards dedicated to this event may be presented.

Coins of the "GVS" series

The Central Bank of Russia launched a unique series in 2011 coins with the abbreviation "DHW". All products are valued at 10 rubles and the same obverse displaying the denomination of the coin, the year of issue, the name of the bank and a decorative border in the form of a stylized olive and oak tree. The reverse of each coin is the author's work, made in accordance with the order mint.

The material used to create the product is brass-plated steel, which gives a golden hue to each coin. This solution is durable, has ferromagnetic properties, but does not perform well when in contact with water. It is recommended to store the collection in a place protected from moisture to avoid rusting.

The circulation of each product is 10 million units, which makes collectible coins available for purchase. At the moment, 45 coins have been minted, of which 43 were produced at SPMD.

2011

The year the collection started, where the obverse was developed and further images on the reverse were thought out. The collection began with the release of a coin dedicated to Belgorod. The reverse displays the name of the collection, the city and its coat of arms. The minting quality of this coin and all subsequent ones is UNC, which corresponds to large-circulation editions with an even matte sheen and without a mirror surface. Economical technology has a positive effect on the cost of such products.

A total of 8 graduated in 2011 coins with the image first cities who received an honorary title. Each coin has a similar reverse, decorated with the coat of arms of the selected city.

2012

Continuation of the collection of coins of the GVS series. The principle of displaying the obverse and reverse remained the same, with the exception of the year of release of the collection. 8 were released during the year coins dedicated to cities from Voronezh to Meadows, in accordance with the chronology of the coin catalogue.

Sculptor A. N. Bessonov supervised the process of computer modeling of each product.

2013

Over the course of the year, 8 were added to the commemorative collection. coins dedicated to cities from Volokolamsk to Bryansk. The obverse and reverse design styles have been traditionally preserved. The demand for coins from this collection contributed to its further development.

2014

The coats of arms of the missing 8 cities became elements of the collection commemorative coins DHW, traditionally continuing the series. The collection of coins is present in the general catalog and has an index of 5714, which allows you to quickly verify the authenticity and track the correct chronology of their issue. This year's series begins in Nalchik and ends in Kolpino.

2015

A. A. Brynza depicted on 9 coins collections DHW recently awarded cities. Thus, the collection amounted to 41 coins. This year's edition begins with Kalach-on-Don and ends with Grozny. The sequence can be traced in the coin catalogue.

2016

This year was the final year for the release of the GVS collection. The missing 4 cities were minted here. However, assigning the status " Cities of military glory" is not completed, and the assignment of a new city can be marked by exit new coin. The collection was not officially completed, making it possible that it could continue.

45 settlements in Russia are recognized as “Cities of Military Glory”. In 2011, the Central Bank of Russia began minting the first coins of the GVS series with a face value of 10 rubles. They gained their popularity among numismatists due to their low price - you can buy coins of the “City of Military Glory” from 25 rubles.

Circulation and manufacturing features

The coins belong to the commemorative non-precious series issued by the Central Bank of the Russian Federation. They are made of steel with galvanic coating, which gives additional brightness. 45 coins (for each city) were issued between 2011 and 2016 (gradually 4-9 per year). The circulation was 10 million copies for each city, i.e. in the amount of 450 million

Main Features

The weight of the coins is 5.63 g, diameter - 22 mm, thickness - 2.2 mm. The edge consists of 6 structural zones of 5 reefs each and 6 zones of 7 reefs each, which alternate with flat areas. In the DHW series, the obverse has the same style. The denomination is indicated on it; inside the zero there are small inscriptions “10” and “RUB”, visible only when the viewing angle is changed. At the top of the edge there is the inscription: “Bank of Russia”, at the bottom - the year of minting. On the left is an olive branch, on the right is an oak branch.

The reverse is made in the same style: on top (next to the collar) there is a ribbon with the inscription CITIES OF MILITARY GLORY; in the center - the coat of arms of the locality; at the bottom is the name of the city. There are several reasons to buy military glory coins:

  • They cost tens of times cheaper than coins from precious series.
  • You can purchase a complete set of 45 pieces. This way the cost of one coin will be lower.
  • The issue of coins has been discontinued, therefore, their value will only increase over the years.

Today I decided to talk about one of the most patriotic series of coins issued by the Central Bank of the Russian Federation. This series of commemorative coins: “Cities of Military Glory”(abbreviated as DHW). Looking ahead, I can say that at the time of writing, more than forty types of these coins have already been issued and the series continues to be replenished. But let's figure it out in order: who are these Cities, how many are there and why, when did they start minting GVS coin series and how long it will last and, of course, let's look directly at the coins of this series themselves.

Cities of Military Glory. Story.

The history of the appearance of the title City of Military Glory goes back to 2006, when Federal Law No. 68-FZ of May 9, 2006 “On the honorary title of the Russian Federation “City of Military Glory” was adopted.

Excerpt:
The title “City of Military Glory” is awarded to cities of the Russian Federation, on the territory of which or in the immediate vicinity of which, during fierce battles, the defenders of the Fatherland showed courage, fortitude and mass heroism, including cities of the Russian Federation that were awarded the title “Hero City”.

So, what can we glean from the text of the Law: firstly, this is a fairly new title and it is being awarded for the first time (since 2006) and, secondly, this is not a replacement or continuation of the list of cities that have received the title “Hero City” , but a fundamentally separate hierarchy, but as the Law states, these lists may have intersections. And the most important thing: The title of the City of Military Glory is awarded according to the established procedure, therefore, the list is not complete and can continue to be replenished.

It is also worth noting the following that, according to the established procedure: the assignment of this status to the City of Military Glory is strictly within the competence of the President of the country and is officially approved by his Decree. In addition, a number of events are held directly in the city itself, including:

  • installation of a stele with the image of the city’s coat of arms and the text of the Presidential decree on conferring this title;
  • holding festive events and fireworks on February 23 (Defender of the Fatherland Day), May 9 (Victory Day), and City Day.

Series of coins “Cities of Military Glory”

The minting of this series began in 2011. For the entire series of GVS coins, a single denomination was chosen - 10 rubles. But unlike the more familiar, by that time, bimetallic 10-ruble notes commemorative coins, these coins were made in a new stylistic and technological design. The material chosen was Steel with brass electroplating, as a result of which the coins received a yellow-gold color similar in color to the usual circulation 10 rubles, ferromagnetic properties, and, unfortunately, the properties of actively entering into a chemical reaction with water or simply rusting. The diameter of the coin circle blank is 22 mm, thickness is 2.20 mm, weight is 5.63 g. Almost the entire circulation of 10 ruble coins from the “Cities” series Military Glory"was given to the St. Petersburg Mint, with the exception of only two coins - Stary Oskol and Grozny. Each coin is issued as an AC, in the amount of 10 million copies.

Design of 10 ruble coins of the GVS series

Obverse of coins:
In the center of the coin disk is the denomination of the coin in two lines “10 RUBLES”, the numbers are much larger than the letters. Inside the number “0” there is a protective element in the form of longitudinal thin lines; at a certain angle of inclination of the coin, the inscriptions “10” and “RUB” appear against its background. The circumference of the coin is outlined by an edging along the entire perimeter. Along the edge at the top there is the inscription: “BANK OF RUSSIA”. Below is the year the coin was minted. On the left there is a laurel branch as a compositional ornament, opposite it on the right there is an oak branch. Below, to the right of the year of minting is the monogram of the manufacturer's mint (SPMD or MMD).

The stylistic design of the obverses of the entire GVS series is unchanged; the only difference is the year of minting at the bottom of the coin field.

Reverse of coins:
At the top, along the collar of the coin, flutters a stylized ribbon with the embossed inscription “CITIES OF MILITARY GLORY.” In the center of the coin disc is the city's coat of arms. Below, in a semicircle, along the edge of the coin is the name of the city.

The edge of the coins is made in the form of alternately alternating smooth sections (12) and interspersed with them by 6 sections of 5 reefs and 6 sections of 7 reefs each.

Future issues of 10 ruble coins in the GVS series

According to the Plan of the Central Bank of the Russian Federation for the release of commemorative coins in 2016, we should expect at least four more coins:

  • Staraya Russa,
  • Petrozavodsk,
  • Gatchina,
  • Feodosia.

But, as was already said at the beginning of the article, list of Cities of Military Glory can be expanded, therefore, list of GVS coin series may well be replenished with new exhibits. And we, dear fellow collectors, can only wait and follow the latest information from the Central Bank.

How much do 10 ruble hot water coins cost?

As we did earlier, we took a number of fairly common price tags and compiled a table of the cost of the “Cities of Military Glory” series of coins:

At the end of 2006, Vladimir Putin signed a presidential decree approving the provision “On the conditions and procedure for conferring the honorary title of city of military glory.” The title itself is awarded, as stated in the regulatory document: “for courage, fortitude and mass heroism shown by the defenders of the city in the struggle for the freedom and independence of the homeland.”

For the first time, the cities of Kursk, Orel and Belgorod were awarded such a title back in May 2007. The title for the city involves the installation of a stele with a memorial plaque with the text of the decree on the assignment and the holding of festive events and fireworks on holidays such as Victory Day, Defender of the Fatherland Day and City Day. True, we are a little unclear on how celebrations should be celebrated, for example, on May 9 in a city that is not a city of military glory... without volleys and without a parade?

This honorary title is, first of all, recognition of the courage and self-sacrifice of the defenders and residents of the locality and the importance of their contribution to the Great Victory over Nazi Germany.

In total, at the moment, the title has been awarded to forty-five cities. The last five (Staraya Russa, Grozny, Gatchina, Petrozavodsk and Feodosia) were awarded the award quite recently, in April 2015. In the foreseeable future, most likely, the list of glorious cities will be replenished with new names, because it cannot be said that during the Great Patriotic War there were populated areas, whose residents did not show heroism or resilience in trying to stop the fascist invaders, standing practically on the threshold of their homes.

We came across an interesting discussion online about why, for example, the city of Voronezh did not receive such an honorary title. And this, it turns out, is connected with this. Most likely, one of the main reasons was that in the bloody battles for Voronezh the second Hungarian army was defeated and destroyed, more than one hundred thousand Hungarian soldiers who fought on the side of Hitler died, and later in the post-war period, Hungary was part of the group of Warsaw Pact countries and was either our involuntary ally or a social buffer zone. camps for the USSR. Probably, it was for political and ideological reasons that these facts were hushed up, and the heroic past of Voronezh has not yet been assessed at the official level.

Since 2011, the central bank began minting new series coins dedicated to cities of military glory with a denomination of 10 rubles. The coins were produced in steel, plated with brass, and had a diameter of 22 millimeters. The reverses show the coats of arms of the cities, and the obverses show the denomination and year of minting. By the spring of 2015, 32 different dozens had already been released, with a circulation of 10 million pieces each. Since the issue volume is quite large, the cost of coins today is low; the first coins of the 2011 series are valued a little more expensive. The most expensive ten today is considered to be Yelets, valued at 100 rubles for a brand new copy without circulation. Fresh coins of the GVS series can be caught in everyday life, but the quality of such anniversary coins, as a rule, leaves much to be desired; the coins quickly darken and become covered with unsightly spots of corrosion.

Every year the number of people collecting anniversary tens is growing. Those who have been interested in collecting since the first issue can easily understand commemorative series, mints, and also know which ones are the rarest and most expensive. Those who started collecting them relatively recently find it difficult. Indeed, in recent years, more than a hundred different coins with a denomination of 10 rubles have been issued. Some of them were dedicated to round dates, while other dozens were produced as part of commemorative series. In the article we will talk about the classification of these banknotes, as well as their numismatic value.

Cost (approximate prices)

Prices for 10 ruble commemorative coins are growing year by year. It would seem that banknotes produced in quantities of 5-10 million copies could well satisfy the demand of all collectors in the country. But numismatists are interested in buying only well-preserved specimens, the number of which decreases over time, since a significant amount of money suffers from careless handling and improper storage. Prices have increased especially sharply for issues of the past decade, which are almost impossible to find in circulation these days.

Cost of bimetallic coins

Below are approximate prices. They are relevant for copies in the UNC state of preservation, that is, which have not been in circulation. Their actual value may differ greatly from the indicated value, which will depend on the method and place of sale, the degree of preservation and other factors. Nevertheless, these figures can serve as a guide for the initial assessment.

  • The cost of "55 Years of Victory", issued in 2000, depends on the mint mark. Copies with the MMD badge are valued at 60 rubles, with the SPMD mark - about 100 rubles.
  • The price of 10 rubles "Gagarin" 2001 also depends on the mint mark: MMD - 70 rubles, SPMD - 120 rubles.
  • Coins from 2002 are valued at 120 rubles.
  • The cost of copies of the “Ancient Cities of Russia” series, minted between 2001 and 2009, ranges from 150 to 200 rubles.
  • Issues of the series "Russian Federation" 2005-2008. can be sold at prices ranging from 30 to 50 rubles.
  • Copies of "60 Years of Victory" 2005, released in an edition of 60 million pieces, are sold at a price of up to 50 rubles.
  • Dozens of "Ancient Cities" 2010-2016 sold on average up to 100 rubles. per coin.
  • Regions of 2010: "Nenets Autonomous Okrug" - 300 rubles, "Perm Territory" - 3 thousand rubles, "Chechen Republic" - 8 thousand rubles, "Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug" - more than 10 thousand rubles.
  • The cost of the 2010 Population Census is 300 rubles.
  • Chervonetsy with coats of arms of the constituent entities of the Russian Federation 2011-2016. are estimated at an average of 30-50 rubles.
  • The price of 10 ruble coins of 2015, dedicated to the Victory in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945, usually does not exceed 30 rubles.

As you can see from the list, there are three editions that have a very high price. They were released in 2010 and belong to the “Russian Federation” commemorative series. For reasons that are not stated, the circulation of these coins turned out to be very small, which affected their value:

Price of steel chervonets

Steel anniversary chervonets with brass coating do not have a high cost. The price of coins of this type rarely exceeds 30 rubles. The exception is a dozen of 2010 “65 Years of Victory”, which can be sold for 100 rubles.

What does the cost depend on?

There are a number of factors that significantly affect the value of commemorative coins. Beginning numismatists need to keep them in mind in order to correctly evaluate.

1. Degree of preservation. Copies even with minor abrasions will be valued several times lower than coins that have retained their original appearance. Here we must remember that under no circumstances try to make the banknote shine on your own. In most cases this will reduce the cost even further. For cleaning, you should use only specialized products, and it is better to entrust this process to a specialist.

2. Rare variety. Within the same release, specimens may be found that have slightly perceptible differences. There are numismatists who classify such differences. They are interested in identifying all the existing varieties. Some varieties are common, others less common. The cost of rare ones can reach impressive figures. For example, 10 ruble coin 2000 “55 Years of Victory” (also called “Politruk”) with the SPMD stamp has several varieties, one of which is valued at more than a thousand rubles.

The photo shows how to identify a valuable variety:

3. Coin with a defect. In the coin business, as in any other industry, defects occur. Rejected coins have a defect that makes them unique. There are various types coin defect. Such types of defects as rotation, unmarked, scratched stamps are common and are usually not highly valued by collectors. More expensive are products with a split stamp and a bite, especially if they are pronounced. There are also specific defects among bimetallic chervonets. For example, defective insertion or double cutting.

In the photo below, a coin with a displaced insert, sold in 2016 at auction for 10 thousand rubles:

Where is it profitable to sell anniversary chervonets?

As mentioned above, coins that have high degree safety. Rare varieties or money with defects can also be sold profitably. For the rest of the chervonets, especially those that were withdrawn from circulation, finding a buyer is not so easy. Nevertheless, if desired, such instances can be implemented.

You can sell them in the following places:

  • in numismatist clubs that exist in all major cities,
  • in numismatic stores,
  • on the Internet (on forums, auctions, social networks and so on).

It is necessary to understand that the final cost will depend on the terms of sale. Typically, the highest price can be offered at numismatic auctions on the Internet. If a coin is offered at a well-known auction, then several collectors may compete for its possession at the same time, which will undoubtedly lead to a high final cost of the lot. If you want to sell a coin quickly, you should turn to resellers who will take on the job of finding a collector willing to purchase it. You should not expect that such a reseller will offer a very high price for it.
