Initially, Petri Dish was conceived as a parody of the latter. None of the developers could have imagined that a simple flash game would form such a huge army of fans who were ready to spend long hours playing this exciting entertainment.
How did this game manage to become so popular? Three secrets:
- Simplicity of everything: from gameplay to graphics,
- Wide range of game modes (more than 20),
- Availability on all types of devices that can connect to the Internet.
To play Petri Dish you don’t need anything: no downloads, no registration. You just click on the “start” icon and immediately find yourself in the game.
Rules
Before you start, you need to select a server and game mode. To get comfortable, we recommend starting with the standard one. The choice of server depends on your location and time zone. The one closest to you has more players. If you are not confident in your abilities, go to a server on another continent. There will be fewer people there, because while you are awake, they are sleeping.
The focus of the game is a small bacterium in a petri dish with a closed lid. Germs of other participants scurry around. Everyone's goal is to become the biggest player on the server. To do this, you need to feed and develop the contents of your cup. In fact, the entire game is also a copy of a giant Petri vessel from a biological laboratory. In it, virtual cells of players are born, develop and die.
For yours to live the longest, it needs to be fed. To do this, use food scattered across the map and smaller participants.
But keep in mind: the larger your bacteria becomes, the slower it moves. Others may catch up with her and devour her.
To control the Petri Dish game, use the following buttons:
- Mouse – move around the map,
- Space – dividing the bacterium into two parts. The effect lasts 30 seconds,
- W – depending on the game version, feed the bacteria or shoot at enemies,
- Esc – enter the menu,
- E – display the compass on the screen,
- R – press pause.
When you get used to standard map, try playing in other modes.
Our TOP 5 game versions:
- TEAM – a mode of collective struggle of three squads: red, green, blue. You can eat everyone except members of your team.
- ARENA – single player, in which each participant has only one life. All maps (except the first) are reduced in size. If there are not enough real participants to start the game, the server adds aggressive bots to the location.
- CRAZY FFA is the craziest Petri dish mode. Here everything is turned upside down. If in normal game The W key helps you gain weight; in CRAZY FFA, on the contrary, it reduces your weight.
- ZOMBIE is the most difficult version of the passage. Before the game starts, one of the participants is designated as a zombie. He tries to enslave as many bacterial cells as possible by simply touching them. The cells resist. Whoever finds the Hero booster will be able to eat the zombies.
- DEATHMATCH is a “Petri dish” mode in which it is impossible to eat another participant. But you can shoot him with the W button. The rating of players is determined by the number of victims.
Have you thought about growing an entire culture of bacteria, say, for science or for fun? This matter, oddly enough, is surprisingly simple. All you need is agar nutrient medium, a few sterile Petri dishes, and bacteria!
Steps
Preparing Petri dishes

Prepare agar nutrient medium. Agar is a jelly-like substance used to grow bacterial cultures. Agar is made from red and brown algae and provides an ideal environment for many different types of microorganisms. Sometimes other substances such as sheep's blood are added to agar if the goal is to achieve more rapid growth of microorganisms.
- The easiest way is to use powdered agar. You will need 1.2 grams (½ teaspoon) for every 10cm petri dish.
- In a heatproof container, dilute the agar powder in 60 milliliters (¼ cup) of hot water. You understand, 60 ml is for one Petri dish. Calculate the proportion you need yourself.
- Place the container with water and powder in the microwave and, after bringing the water to a boil, boil it for a minute. The main thing is that the agar solution does not “run away”.
- The nutrient medium is considered ready when the powder has completely dissolved and the liquid itself has become transparent.
- Allow the growing medium to cool, then proceed to the next steps.

Prepare the Petri dishes. You've probably seen them - small flat cups made of glass or transparent plastic. Petri dishes have two parts, upper and lower, they are inserted into each other, which serves to protect the culture of microorganisms from air and other potential sources of contamination, and also contains gases released by microorganisms during the growth phase.
- Petri dishes must be sterile. Sterile! Otherwise, the results of the experiment on growing bacteria will go down the drain. If you buy Petri dishes, they should be sold in hermetically sealed packaging (such dishes are pre-sterilized using the cold method).
- Remove the cups from the packaging and separate the halves. Very carefully pour the nutrient medium into the bottom half of the cup in a thin layer, just covering the bottom.
- Quickly close the Petri dish to prevent airborne bacteria from entering the agar. Let the Petri dishes sit quietly for 30–120 minutes until the nutrient medium cools and hardens (the finished nutrient medium will resemble jelly).

Cool the Petri dishes. Unless you plan to immediately introduce bacteria into their new home, then the Petri dishes must be placed in the refrigerator until their time comes.
- Storing Petri dishes in the refrigerator ensures that the water does not evaporate (and bacteria love water). In addition, the nutrient medium will become a little harder in the cold, and this will prevent you from accidentally tearing it while adding bacteria.
- Petri dishes should be stored upside down in the refrigerator. This way, condensation will not accumulate on the lid, which will then drip back and spoil the nutrient medium.
- Petri dishes with nutrient medium can be kept in the refrigerator for a couple of months. When it's their turn, remove the cups from the refrigerator and let them come to room temperature.
Growing bacteria

Place the bacterial culture in a Petri dish. The agar is solid, the Petri dish is at room temperature - everything is ready to continue the experiment! What's next on the plan? That's right, adding a bacterial culture to the nutrient medium! And here there are two methods - either direct contact or sampling.
- Direct contact: In this case, bacteria enter the agar through... yes, through direct contact with it. One of the most common methods for replanting in this way is to simply lightly touch the surface of the nutrient medium with your finger (before or after washing your hands, it doesn’t matter). Alternatively, you can touch it with your fingernail or even an old coin. You can simply place a hair on the nutrient medium or drop a drop of milk there. Basically, use your imagination!
- Sampling: This method allows you to collect samples of microorganisms from any surface and transfer them to a growing medium. All you need are cotton swabs. Simply pass the stick where you want to take a microflora sample (either from your mouth or from the keyboard), then run the same end of the stick over the surface of the nutrient medium (do not tear it). In a couple of days you will see the interesting and terrible results of your experiment!
- Alternatively, microorganisms from different sources can be added to a Petri dish - to do this, you just need to divide the dish into quarters.
- We recommend leaving one quarter without microorganisms - as a control group. This will tell you whether the agar was contaminated before introducing the bacterial samples.

Close, label and seal the Petri dishes. Once you have placed the bacteria in the growing medium, you will need to put a lid on the dish and seal it with something like tape.
- Be sure to label what and where it grows in each specific cup, otherwise you won’t remember later. You can write with a marker.
- As an extra precaution, you can store each cup in a separate ziplock bag. This will provide an additional layer of protection for growing bacteria. If the package is transparent, this will not prevent you from looking at the results.

Place the Petri dishes in a warm and dark place. Let's say for a few days so that the bacteria can grow quietly. And don’t forget that you still need to store Petri dishes upside down so that random drops of condensation falling from the lid do not spoil the beauty of the colony of microorganisms.
- The optimal temperature at this stage is somewhere between 20–37 °C. However, if you need microorganisms to grow more slowly, you can always move them to a cooler place.
- Give the bacteria at least 4-6 days to grow. During this time, the culture will develop quite well. You will be notified that growth has begun by the characteristic smell coming from the Petri dishes.

Record your results. After a few days, you will notice that in each Petri dish there is a thick growth of something different - bacteria, mold, fungi, and so on.
- Record your observations of each cup and draw conclusions about where the most bacteria were.
- What's in your mouth? And on the doorknob? What about the keyboard? Oh, the results will amaze you...
- Using a special marker, you can track the growth rate of bacteria by daily drawing the outline of the culture on the bottom of a Petri dish. In a few days, the bottom will look like a cut of wood - everything is in circles!

Test the effectiveness of antibacterial agents. It will be interesting to see what happens if you add something antibacterial (soap, for example) to the bacterial culture. How effective will it be?
- Using a cotton swab, place a drop of something antibacterial in the center, then continue the experiment as usual.
- The bacteria in the cup will grow, forming a ring around the area where the antibacterial substance was applied. There will be no bacteria there; this is the so-called “dead zone”.
- The effectiveness of antibacterial substances can be compared by assessing the width of the dead zone in different Petri dishes. The principle is simple: the wider the zone, the more effective the substance.
In order to start gaining mass, you need to devour other players on one side and make friends with several of them on the other. You can organize meetings and even parties in the Petri Dish. You can team up with several players, develop a common strategy and make your way to the top of the food chain.
There is always someone present in the game, gatherings are organized, streamers appear, various competitions from the administration, and so on. Skins are tailored to suit clients as much as possible, and their selection is simply huge. There is no cheating, hidden fees or bots in the game. All cheating players are instantly detected and blocked by the administration.
The game begins by choosing the map on which your hero will be born and the mode in which you are ready to play. The more people on the map, the more difficult it is to play; the fewer, the easier it is. As for the modes, these are HardCore, MegaSplit, FFA and others. After you have chosen a mode, read its rules (they are located on the right). Different cards also differ in limits and amount of food, so you also need to understand the card from the very beginning.
There are quite a lot of buttons involved in the Petri dish, although in order to understand what you need to press first and what you can wait for, you need to understand which processes are paramount and which are less important. One of the most important processes is the separation of the player into parts in the event of a collision with a large and dangerous adversary. Space is responsible for the separation. Feeding and shooting are controlled by the same button - W. Sometimes the game is paused (F button) when the danger of being eaten by another player is too great. The V button, for example, is responsible for shooting a virus. The compass is turned on and off with the E key, full screen turns on - F11, and you can exit the menu with the Escape key.
Purpose of the game
The goal of the game is quite simple - to teach any gamer how to work, both in a team and individually. The game actively practices interaction, both between players and between the latter and the administration.
In addition, the game trains your reaction and decision-making speed. If you haven’t been able to think globally and build a line of survival and advancement in the game until now, now you will gradually master it! All processes practiced by the game are very relevant for real life!

It is recommended to immediately start eating the weak. At the same time, it’s worth quickly “making your legs” from stronger comrades. All players will try to absorb you, normal practice. Remember the basic rule: either you dominate or you will be eaten. A gamer can take a life from another cell only if it is 2.6 times larger.
