Good evening everyone!

My son has been a Lego fan literally from the first years of his life; we already have more than 10 different sets in our arsenal. At the age of 4-5 years, we mainly purchased Creator (3 in 1) and City sets. At the same time, the kits were taken with age recommendations for a year or two older. And the son collected them himself (some up to 3-5 times a week). At first, under our close attention, and then (when it became obvious that he did not take parts into his mouth) on his own.

Therefore, this year, for our birthday, friends decided to diversify our collection with construction sets from the Technic and Ninjago series.

Today I want to tell you more about the Lego Technic Racing Kart set.

Description on the official website:

Race around in this super cool 2-in-1 replica of a real-life racing kart, featuring a detailed engine with moving pistons, a fuel tank and huge exhaust pipes. Tilt the sleek orange racer's seat to reveal the active transmission. Then climb into the cockpit and check out the working steering wheel, two-speed gearbox and cool pedals! This ultra-fast car features vibrant purple and orange colors, sleek tires and cool racing decals! Rebuild it into a powerful car for the track.

The packaging does not stand out from other Lego products - a large cardboard box with a large number images of the resulting model. Inside are parts packed in bags and assembly instructions.

The construction set consists of 345 parts and several stickers, which is significantly less than some of our sets.

I would like to note that in the Technic series, there are various mechanical and electrical elements, which, on the one hand, significantly complicate the assembly, and on the other, make the process more interesting and educational.

Thus, the Racing Kart set contains mechanical elements in the form of gears and a piston, which set the kart in motion, ensure that the wheels turn when the steering wheel is turned, etc. Therefore, the child develops an additional interest in mechanics.

For the first time in the last year, I was faced with the fact that my son needed help in assembling (and this is with his experience). Therefore, in this case, I would still advise adhering to age recommendations.

So, as a result of 2-hour shenanigans, we ended up with a racing kart on the first day (I apologize for the background and quality of the photos, as they were taken while we were away from home)

And of course, the quality of Lego, as always, is excellent - the parts are strong, the fastenings are reliable, the stickers are well fixed and do not come off after prolonged use (we have been playing with the set for three months now).

The price varies on various sites from 1600 to 2000 rubles.

Description

Review of Lego set 42048 "Racing kart"

ABOUT THE MODEL
Lego 42048 Racing Kart can be considered a junior model middle group sets in the Technic series 2016. The set contains 345 parts.
Karts are a kind of carts with a motor and wheels. They first appeared in the USA in the 30s of the 20th century, then became popular in the UK and other countries. Nowadays, kart racing is a full-fledged sport, with championships, ratings, star racers and other paraphernalia. Most Formula 1 drivers started out in karting.
The alternative model of this set is also a sports car, although made in a different style. This is a track racing car, with a distinctive spoiler at the rear and a wing at the front.

PACKAGE
The colorful front of the box contains an image of the card located on race track in a ready-to-start position. In the lower right corner there is a small picture demonstrating the main functions.
On back side The box contains an alternative model of this set.
On the top edge of the package there is a life-size image of a kart wheel.

INSTRUCTIONS
It's nice that the box with the kit includes instructions for assembling both versions of the car. These are two approximately identical smooth glossy brochures, approximately half A4 in size and 84 and 72 pages in length respectively. The instructions are quite detailed and there are additional pictures of some of the axles and parts to help you determine the size.
Well, if you don’t want to leaf through books, then you can assemble the set looking at the screen of an Android or Apple electronic tablet using the proprietary LEGO Building Instructions program (or you can download these instructions directly from our website).

DETAILS
About a quarter of the box is free so that parts and stickers are not crushed during transportation.
Inside the box you will find:
two books with instructions for assembling the main and alternative models,
sticker sheet,
parts packaged in five bags.

This set contains several parts that are being produced for the first time in this color. This:
technical axis 5 yellow,
four red tech-axes for four,
a pair of orange technical panels,
a pair of long narrow dark gray technical panels 3x11,
four dark lilac curved technical panels 3x13.
Among the useful parts of the set, the rather rare large steering wheel immediately catches your eye.

BASIC MODEL Lego 42048 “Racing Kart”
Assembly
Assembly begins from the central part of the frame. Then we move on to the rear axle and gearbox assembly. We strengthen, consolidate and move forward. We assemble the steering rack and steering column. We design the nose card. Beautiful side skirts appear. Add the rear bumper and finish assembling the engine and fuel tank. All that remains is to add the aerodynamic wings on the nose, and the last (and most important) is the driver's seat. The final chord is to put the wheels on the axles and close the rims. Ready!

Appearance
Dimensions of the assembled map (height/length/width – 8/23/12 cm).
This is a quite neat, proportional, low, stable single-seater. Perhaps it can be called best kart ever released as part of the LEGO TECHNIC series. The large driver's seat and wide steering wheel immediately catch your eye. The gear shift lever is located under the driver's left hand. The filling of the card is made in strict gray tones. The body, on the contrary, is assembled from bright parts in lilac and orange colors. Small neat black wheels with flat discs. Single-cylinder engine and a small fuel tank next to it. Minimalism: every detail is in its place. The model is very strong - you can easily take it by any part.

Spare parts
Upon completion of the assembly process, 8 spare parts will remain unused. These are mainly small parts that love to hide and get lost during assembly.

Functions
This model provides two main functions:
The first is responsible for changing gears in the gearbox connecting the rear drive axle to the engine. As already mentioned, a lever located to the left of the driver’s seat serves this purpose. The lever has three positions: high gear, neutral and low gear. The switching takes place very clearly: you touch the lever, the rod is activated on the other side of the seat, you click the switch in the rear of the car and you're done.
The second function is technically less complex and boils down to turning the front wheels when turning the steering wheel. It would seem that complex structures with gears await us. But, no: the steering rack contains two side elements and there is a cam on the steering axle that rests against these elements. Simple, beautiful and elegant.

Stickers
The set includes a sheet of 11 stickers.
Most of them are beautiful numbered sport stripes designed to decorate large curved surfaces on the front, back and sides of the kart.
Of course there are a couple of stickers on the front bumper and wing.
There are also stickers on the wheels. They are paired and this time the stickers for the right and left sides are made symmetrically and vice versa. So don't mix up the wheels.
Well, the “pasting” is completed with a small sticker on the lid of the fuel tank.
All stickers are bright and glossy. They look great and give the model a “berry” flavor.

ALTERNATIVE MODEL Lego 42048 Technics
Assembly
Now let's look at an alternative model. Assembly instructions are included in the kit or can be opened in the previously mentioned application.
Assembly begins with the frame. This time it looks non-standard, and contains elements that are incomprehensible at first glance, but a little later everything will fall into place.
At the rear, an unusually weighted engine is assembled, connected to the rear axle. A rear bumper with an exhaust pipe appears.
We move to the front of the car and assemble the front steering rack. We add a driver's seat and steering wheel to the cabin.
Now we attach the door sills and cover the rear of the car with curved panels. We attach the rear brake lights and headlights. We cover the front part with the hood and add the front wing. Add a cover to the back engine compartment immediately behind the driver's cabin and a spoiler above the rear bumper. Turn it over and add element protection. Turn it over and put on the wheels. The final touch is the rear view mirrors and you're done!

Appearance
Dimensions of the assembled model (height/length/width) – 8/25/12 cm.
The car is quite unusual and bright. The open driver's cabin resembles a convertible. Everything in the cabin is simple and convenient: the driver’s seat, the steering wheel in front of him, and the lever on the right. The insides of the car are not noticeable, as they are covered with overlays. There is a rear spoiler and an aggressive front wing, giving the car a brutal, sporty look. The model is quite strong and looks unusually fresh both in shape and in the selection of colors.

Functions
A racing car is supposed to drive forward and turn to the sides.
1. A single-cylinder engine helps us move forward. This time the motor has a surprise: the top of the cylinder is closed with a cover with a hole into which a connector with a cover is inserted. When the engine is running, this cap moves up and down simultaneously with the movement of the piston inside the engine. You don’t see this often - usually either the pistons move in plain sight or everything is very deeply hidden and motionless on the outside.
2. We've sorted out the engine, let's move on to turns. It may seem to us that there is a gear shift lever or something like that in the driver's cabin, but in fact it is a mechanism that actually turns the steering front wheels. The steering wheel in this case is decorative.
3. An unexpected, but quite pleasant additional feature is the lifting of the engine compartment cover at the rear of the car to examine the operation of the engine.

ELECTRIFICATION
Due to the rather large size of the main and alternative models, they are quite well electrified. You only need:
Power Function IR Remote Control (article 8885),
Power Function IR Receiver (article 8884),
Power Functions Battery Box (article 8881),
steering servo motor Power Functions Servo-Motor (article 88004),
Power Functions M-Motor motor (item 8883).
set of batteries for the battery pack and remote control.
Additionally:
it would be very nice to install a differential on the rear axle, but you can do without it;
In addition to electrical parts, you will need a number of connectors, axes and beams.

CONCLUSIONS
Advantages of Lego 42048 Technic Racing Kart models:
- Very unusual selection of colors. Bright, but not colorful.
- High structural strength of models is an important quality for the game.
- The set includes several unusual curved panels.
- Interesting set of functions.
- In the main model, it is very clearly demonstrated how the gearbox works.
- Stickers perfectly decorate the main model and look quite good on the alternative one.
- Quite simple electrification of the model with additional elements and parts.

Disadvantages of models:
- Excessively large turning radius of the main model.
