Written consultation

Plastic cards distributed by banks of a particular payment system have their own distinctive features and various elements of their protection against counterfeiting.

At the same time, it should be noted that each payment system that imitates a PC periodically takes additional measures to further improve the elements of protecting PCs and other payment documents from counterfeiting.

A plastic card is thus a plastic rectangle, on the front side of which, in strictly fixed places for each issuer, there is a trademark designation of the payment system, applied in different ways for each system.

At the bottom of the front side of the card, an embossed account number is applied, which consists of 16 (less often 19) digits. The first digit determines the name of the interbank association (for example, No. 3 - American Express, No. 4 - VISA, No. 5 - Master Card, etc.).

The first six digits of an account number are called the base (or bank) identification number (BIN), which identifies the bank that issued the account number.

The following digits of the account indicate serial number cards in the payment system, they are the individual number of the card holder. Using this number at the bank you can obtain information: when the account was opened and who owns the card with this number, what transactions were carried out using a PC.

Under the account number, the date of expiration of the card (sometimes the beginning of the term) and the surname and name of the card holder are stamped using the embossing method.

In Russian payment systems, the embossed text on cards is in Cyrillic.

On the front side plastic cards Different payment systems have several elements to protect cards from counterfeiting

For example, on the front side of VISA cards there are the following protection elements:

a) A holographic image of a dove, which is located on the map on the right. When you change the angle on the hologram, you can see the movement of the edge of the dove's wing and a change in color is observed. In addition, the last four digits of the embossed account number are placed on the hologram.

b) Microprinting. The VISA Association logo is placed in the upper or lower right corner of the card, above or below the hologram. The logo is surrounded by a security feature known as microprinting. This tiny line of repeating alphanumeric code, invisible to the naked eye, consists of specific identification and control data, including the type of product and the name of the card manufacturer.

c) Ultraviolet pigeon. In the center of the card, a fluorescent image of a dove appears under ultraviolet rays.

d) The printed BIN is the number from the first four digits of the embossed embossed account number.

The BIN is either above or below the imprinted account number. Going forward, the Bank Identification Number (BIN) will be located below the account number.

e) VISA “V”. Immediately behind the card's expiration date, an embossed security feature called a "flying V" or "VISA V" is placed, with the left stroke of the "V" in a strictly vertical position.

On the reverse side of the card there is a magnetic stripe of two, three or four tracks for recording in encrypted form the information embossed on the front side of the card, as well as a PIN (personal identification number - it is four-digit and is the card holder’s password).

A magnetic stripe is a piece of special magnetic film that is attached to the card during its manufacture.

On the magnetic stripe of PCs issued by the VISA association, there is one of three elements to protect the card from counterfeiting: check value (CVV), space for the cardholder's signature, or check value 2 (CVV2).

Control value (CVV) is an algorithmically calculated number that can be controlled by the issuing bank when performing a transaction on an electronic terminal.

In the signature area (signature field) there is the signature of the card holder and on a white field at an angle of 45° the word “VISA” is printed in blue and gold letters.

When you try to remove a signature from a signature field, the word “VOID” appears on it.

The signature on the card is checked against the signature on the slip (sales receipt) at the time of purchasing the goods at the point of sale to ensure that the card is being used by its legal holder.

In addition, the indented signature field is printed with a left-skewed number known as Control Value 2 (CVV2), which can be used by the issuing bank to confirm the authenticity of the card.

Under the magnetic stripe on the back of the PC there may be information about its issuer.

In addition to the individual and original design for each payment system, there are other means of PC protection, which include: high-quality printing, hologram, photograph of the card holder, holographic laminating film, microtext, the presence and features of a stripe (signature field) for a signature sample, etc.

1. Bank card identification:

1.1. Identify the Bank card presented for payment (hereinafter also referred to as the “card”) and carry out an external inspection of the card to determine its authenticity and validity.
1.2. Do not service cards that have not yet expired or have already expired (the card's expiration date is indicated on its front side). The card's validity period reflects the card's start date and expiration date (for example, 07/00 07/02). Sometimes the card's expiration date may only contain its expiration date. The card's start and end dates are located below the number embossed on the card. The card is valid from 00.00 hours on the first day of the month indicated on it (in our example: - from 00.00 hours on July 1, 2000) until 24.00 hours inclusive of the last day of the month indicated on it (in the example: - until 24.00 hours inclusive on July 31, 2002 ).
1.3. Do not serve local cards, i.e. cards that indicate that they are valid only in one country, with the exception of Russia: if the card is local, the country of its validity is indicated on the front side (“Valid only in [country name]” - “Valid only in [country name]”) . The exception is cards that indicate “Valid only in Russia” - “Valid only in Russia”. Such cards must be accepted for payment.
1.4. Determine by the logo whether the Holder’s card belongs to one of the supported payment systems: VISA, MASTERCARD, DINERS CLUB/ DISCOVER.

2. Determining the authenticity of a bank card:

2.1. Make sure there are no signs of counterfeiting or damage to the card (bends, melted areas, traces of changes in the card number, holes and other obvious damage to the surface, etc.).
2.2. Make sure that the Holder's signature is on the back of the card and that there are no signs of tampering with the signature strip itself. If an attempt was made to change the signature on the panel, the word "VOID" will appear on the panel. If the signature on the signature strip differs from the signature on the slip/check, be sure to ask the Holder to sign again or present an identification document, the details of which should be written in the slip or on the front side of the terminal check. If there is no signature on the back of the card, ask the Cardholder to sign the card and present an identification document containing a sample of his signature. The card can be accepted for payment only if both signatures match, otherwise it can be withdrawn.
2.3. Having determined that the card belongs to one of the payment systems, make sure that the following required elements are present:

2.3.1. For VISA cards:

on the front side
- "VISA" logo in the form of a tricolor flag (blue, white, gold): "VISA" is written on a white stripe.

- VISA card number starting with “4” and consisting of 16 or 13 digits: “4ХХХ ХХХХ XXXX ХХХХ” or “4ХХХ ХХХ ХХХ ХХХ”, the last group of numbers must be in the hologram field;
- the first four digits of the embossed card number must match the four digits of the bank's BIN, printed under the card number;
- the card’s validity period can be embossed with the initial and final dates, for example, 10/96 - 10/98, or only the final ones, for example, 10/98; the card can be issued for a period of 1 month, 1 year, 2 years and 3 years;
- after the expiration date of the card there must be a special security symbol “V”, embossed on the card in a special “flying italic” font (slanted to the right);
- an image of a flying dove in the center of the card, visible in ultraviolet light (violet or red glow);
- personal data of the Cardholder (name, surname) are applied by embossing;
- there may be a photo of the cardholder and/or a photocopy of his signature (see picture).

A card with a photograph of the owner and a photocopy of his signature on the front side.

On the reverse side
- magnetic strip soldered into plastic, not glued;
- if there is a contact group (chip or smart card), the signature strip should not extend into the area where the contact group is located;
- the signature panel must contain a clear (not erased or smeared) signature of the Cardholder;
- on the signature panel there is an oblique text of the repeated words “VISA”, written in blue and gold;

Eurocard/MasterCard cards

At the top front side The card contains the name of the issuer (the bank or financial company that issued the card) and/or their logo.

On the right side of the card is the MasterCard logo in the form of two intersecting circles in red and yellow (or both black) with the inscription “MasterCard”. Cards from European banks may also contain the Eurocard logo, in the form of a stylized inscription above the MasterCard logo. The Eurocard logo can only appear together with the MasterCard logo.

The card has a hologram of two alternative designs:

1) the first design represents two intersecting earth hemispheres with the image of continents and a meridian grid. When the map is rotated in rays of light, the meridian grid becomes three-dimensional. Under ultraviolet light, the letters “MC” should be visible on the hologram; this design was made on cards manufactured before January 1, 1997;

2) the second design has the following differences compared to the first: there is no meridian grid; the outlines of the intersecting earth's hemispheres with the image of the continents are highlighted; the background along the edges of the hologram contains the inscription “MasterCard”, made in two alternating colors; The intersecting rings are filled with micro-engraved repeating letters “MC”, visible only at 5x magnification.

The card has embossed (applied with a relief print) information made in several lines. The first line has a number embossed in it, which Always starts with the number “5” and consists of 16 digits grouped into 4 groups of 4 digits with one space between each group (5XXX XXXX XXXX XXXX). The last three or four digits of the number are embossed on the hologram. The second line contains the following information (from left to right):

Embossed or printed four-digit number small print directly below the embossed card number (BIN of the issuing bank), must always match the first four digits of the card number;

Abbreviated name of the issuing bank (possibly, but not required);

Card validity period.

MasterCard security symbol in the form of combined letters made in a special format “ M.C. ”.

In ultraviolet light, the letter M appears on the front side of the card in the lower left corner, and the letter C in the lower right corner near the hologram

On the reverse side cards should be:

A magnetic stripe for electronic payments is located at the top of the card.

Signature panel. The position of the customer signature panel should not coincide with the information embossed on the front side of the card and the magnetic stripe. The signature panel must contain the following distinctive features:

The panel must have an oblique, repeating “MasterCard” inscription in red, blue and yellow.

The signature panel is designed in such a way that any attempt to erase or destroy the signature will damage the panel and the “MasterCard” inscription. Therefore, it is necessary to check the integrity of the panel and the presence of the “MasterCard” inscription.

The panel must contain: the last four digits of the card number (or the full sixteen-digit card number - four groups of four digits) and a three-digit card validity code. The card number and card validity code must be completely on the signature panel.

The card issuer identification must contain the following information:

Number of the bank or issuing company that ordered the card, in the “ICA xxxx” format.

Month and year when the plastic order was made.

The company is a plastic manufacturer.

The card may also contain information about the bank or issuing company or the Customer Service Department. The location of this information is not regulated.

On the right side of the card is the Maestro Logo, which consists of two intersecting circles with the inscription “Maestro”. The circles can be blue and red or both black. The logo can be applied to both the front and back of the cards. The map may have a hologram representing two intersecting earth hemispheres with the image of continents and a meridian grid. When the map is rotated in rays of light, the meridian grid becomes three-dimensional. The hologram is an optional design element.

Other information printed on the front side of the card is identical to the information printed on Eurocard/MasterCard cards. If the Cirrus/Maestro card is combined with another payment system, the card number may begin with the number 6. On some cards, only the first four and last four digits of the number are printed to ensure security. In most cases, the number on the cards is lasered or printed in such a way as to exclude the possibility of the card being imprinted on the imprinter.

On back side cards can be marked with the Cirrus logos (two intersecting blue and light blue circles with the inscription “Cirrus” in the center) and EC (EuroCheque - an image of the letters EC, a card holder icon and an electronic keyboard). The signature panel must be marked with an oblique, repeating inscription “Maestro”.

Cirrus/Maestro cards can only be accepted for payment at retail outlets equipped with an electronic terminal (POS terminal).

VISA cards

On front side cards at the top of the card is the name of the issuer (the bank or financial company that issued the card) and/or their logo. On the right side (in the upper or lower corner) there must be a trademark (VISA on a blue-white-gold background), around which a microprint is applied in the form of a continuous frame. The card has a hologram depicting a flying dove. When you turn the map, in the rays of light, the dove “moves” its wings. If the image does not change when you rotate the card or the dove is not visible, this means that the card is fake.

The card has embossed (applied with a relief print) information made in several lines:

The first line has an embossed number, which consists of 13 or 16 digits, and always starts with “4”. The digits of the number can be grouped as follows: for a 13-digit number 4XXX XXX XXX XXX; for a 16-digit number 4XXX XXXX XXXX XXXX. Four digits are printed above or below the embossed number, matching the first four digits of the card number. If they do not match or are missing, then the card may be fake. The last three or four digits of the number must be embossed on the hologram.

The second line contains the card's expiration date and the VISA security symbol - the embossed letter “ V . The security symbol is placed to the right of the card's expiration date. On Classic, Bussines or Premier (Gold) cards issued before 1997, this security symbol may look like this: “ CV ”, ”B.V. " or " PV " respectively. Without the letter “ V ” in one of these options the card is invalid.

The third and fourth lines are used for the cardholder's last name and service information for corporate clients (name of company, bank, etc.). If the name of the company is located on the third line, the cardholder's last name must be embossed on the fourth and vice versa.

Under ultraviolet light, an image of a dove appears in the center of the front of the card.

On back side cards must have: a magnetic stripe for electronic payments, located at the top of the card, a signature panel and additional information about the issuing bank. The position of the signature panel should not coincide with the information embossed on the front of the card and the magnetic stripe. Some cards have a scanned signature of the client on the front side, which can be considered as an example.

The signature panel must contain the following distinctive features:

The panel should be smooth without any signs of distortion or tampering. The inscription AUTHORISED SIGNATURE must be printed above, below, next to or on the strip itself.

The panel must be marked with an inclined repeating inscription “VISA”.

The card number and the three-digit card validity code must be printed on the panel. The card number and card validity code must be completely on the signature panel

The card issuer identification located below the signature panel must contain the following information:

The name of the bank or issuing company that ordered the card.

The card may also contain information about the bank or issuing company or the Customer Service Department. The location of this information is not regulated.

VISA Electron cards

On front side The Electron logo is located on the card. It is a conventional image of a comet (yellow) on a blue background. The inscription “VISA” is located above the comet, the inscription Electron is placed below the comet. The image is enclosed in a rectangular frame. The presence of a hologram with a dove is an optional design element of VISA Electron cards. On the front side there is the inscription “Electronic use only”, which means that this payment product can be used with authorization only through electronic terminals (POS terminals). The card number, expiration date and customer name are lasered or printed rather than embossed. Below the card number must be the card issuing bank identification number (BIN), which must match the first four digits of the card number. The VISA Electron card number starts with 4 and consists of 16 digits. Only the first four and last four digits of the card number are allowed on the card.

The signature panel can be placed on the front or back of the card. The angled signature panel features ELECTRON in blue, red and yellow.

At the top of the back of the card there is a magnetic strip soldered into the plastic. At the bottom of the back of the card, the PLUS logo can be applied, which is a regular rhombus inscribed in a rectangle. The inscription PLUS is placed in the lower corner of the diamond.

Diners Club Cards

On front side The card bears the Diners Club logo, which is located in the upper left corner. On the right side of the logo is the inscription Diners Club International with the â symbol. It is allowed to put the name and logo of the card distributing bank or companion company in the upper left corner of the card. The color of the card is silver with gray wavy lines. On a gray map background there is a darkened world map background. The card number is embossed (stamped out) and always starts with 36, 38, 30 or 39. The card number consists of 14 digits grouped 4-6-4, for example 30XX XXXXXX XXX. The cardholder's name is embossed on the second line. At the bottom of the card are embossed (from left to right): 2 digits of the year the holder joined the club; abbreviation “DC”; two Latin letters of the country code in which the card was issued; card validity period (the initial and final validity period is always indicated); DC symbol in a circle. The security code is printed above the DC symbol - 2 letters.

On back side The card has a magnetic stripe, a signature stripe, at the bottom of which the card number and 3 digits of the security code are laser-etched. The inscription “Valid Woldwide” or “Valid only in Russia” must be present. The hologram does not fall below the DC value and validity period - strictly in this band, not lower and not higher. The hologram panel contains the DC symbol and a world map, and the inscription “Diners Club International” appears against the background of the iridescent colors of the world map, which should not be lowered beyond the background of the map.

American Express cards

On the front side of the card is the card number, which always starts with 37 and has 15 digits grouped 4-6-5 (for example, 37XX XXXXXX XXXXX), the card's validity period is always indicated as the initial and final date (cards are issued for 2-3 years). After the validity period, the year of joining AmEx and the letters A. X. or O. C are indicated.

On personal and corporate cards there is a four-digit digital code (batch code) on the right above the card number. On Optima cards, the code is located on the left above the card number. All types of cards depict a Roman warrior. On personal cards the image of a Roman warrior is located in the center of the card, on corporate cards in the upper left corner. On Optima cards, the warrior image takes up the entire right side of the card. In ultraviolet light the map appears: on the left are the letters AM; in the middle is an image of a Roman warrior; on the right are the letters EX

The back of the card features a magnetic stripe, signature panel, AmEx logo and Made in U.S.A. There is a laser card number under the signature panel.

Cards that do not meet the stated requirements are not subject to service, of which the enterprise employee is obliged to notify the card holder, indicating the reason for the refusal.

2.4. Counterfeit cards of international payment systems have the following distinctive features:

The hologram shimmers with all the colors of the rainbow, but there is no image volume. The hologram background is dim and the image is unclear. The hologram peels off, lifts up and thickens when you press on it;

The laminating film peels off at the edges of the card, in the area of the hologram, or does not adhere tightly to the plastic where the card number is embossed;

The microprint around the VISA logo is practically unreadable and can be easily erased from the card;

The four-digit number printed on the front of VISA and Eurocard/MasterCard cards does not match the first four digits of the card number, or matches but is easily erased from the card;

In ultraviolet light, there are no protective images, or they are blurry and the card itself glows;

The end part of the card is dark;

The signature panel is covered with plain paper and can be easily peeled off. On the signature panel, the protective background in the form of the inscription “Mastercard” (for Eurocard/MasterCard), “VISA” (for VISA cards), “Maestro” (for Cirrus/Maestro cards) is missing or erased;

On the signature panel, the inscription “VOID” is visible;

The cardholder's signature is missing on the signature panel;

The magnetic stripe is stuck to the surface of the card, protrudes above the surface of the card, or is peeling off at the edges.

If a card with one of the listed characteristics is presented, the card is not subject to service.

3. PROCEDURE FOR OPERATIONS USING CARDS.

Tell the operator the telephone number of your point of payment, at which you should report the answer received from the issuer (or say that you will call back yourself after the specified time, asking again for the operator’s number).

· If the client refuses to wait, inform him that authorization has been denied and offer to pay in cash. To find out the reason for the refusal, recommend that the client contact the issuer.

At the same time, on the slip (to the left of the print of the cliche and the customer card) write “Exchange of goods with additional payment.”

3.5.3. When replacing an item with a cheaper one or when the buyer returns an item without replacement, it is necessary to issue a return credit slip (either for the difference in the cost of the item or for the full cost of the returned item).

3.5.4. Before issuing a refund, the company employee must check the card number with the number indicated on the trade slip or electronic terminal receipt presented by the client. It is allowed to issue a refund credit slip only using the customer card with which the purchase was made.

Transfer of money to the merchant's account is carried out on the basis of the final slip. If among the trade slips collected under one final slip there is a slip executed in violation of the Instructions or with errors, the transfer of the entire amount of the final slip will be delayed until the reasons for the incorrect execution of the trade slip are clarified.

In case of incorrect execution of the final slip (collected trade slips are not divided by card type, type of currency, the total amount for slips is incorrectly indicated, etc.), it is necessary to issue a new final slip and transfer them to CB "EAST BRIDGE BANK". On the final slip in the upper left corner you should write “Reissued”.

§ presence of the client’s signature.

Regardless of the transaction amount, the cashier should ask the client to present an identification document (passport, identity card) and enter the document data on the slip.

When servicing your card at an imprinter, you need to request a transaction confirmation code from the authorization center.

When requesting a code, you must provide the company's cliche number, card number, expiration date and amount in rubles. It is imperative to know the commands that can be given to you:

§ “Your code is ....”. The code dictated by the operator must be accurately and accurately written down on the slip in the “authorization code” column. The code can be numeric, alphabetic or mixed.

Recently, more and more Belarusians have begun to contact the main bank of the country with a strange problem: on their cards, or rather, on the inscription strip, the mysterious word Void appears, and cashiers in a store or waiters in a cafe, seeing this inscription, simply refuse to make the payment .

However, no mysticism happened in the world of banking plastic. As one of the commercial banks explained to KP, such an inscription can appear if the strip for personal painting is damaged - either intentionally or due to poor-quality material. The signature on the card is additional opportunity identify the card owner. And, if there is no painting, then you should be asked to sign on the map. If the word Void appeared, then perhaps someone wanted to erase the old signature. However, the presence of a visible inscription does not in any way affect the operation of the card itself. Using it, you can withdraw money from an ATM or make payments at an information kiosk. But you won’t be able to pay at the checkout in a store or cafe.

The problem is not new, it’s just that recently citizens have become more active in using plastic when making payments, which is why the cards are breaking down. The National Bank recommended that Belarusian banks more carefully explain such nuances to both cardholders and those who make payments on them.

The word Void itself means “invalid”, and if it appears on a card, it should be replaced. This is done to protect payments. And the inscriptions appear due to the fact that the layer of the signature strip is erased.

The second equally important question: do they have the right to refuse service to the owner of a card with such an inscription? For example, the Belarusbank website says that damage to the signature strip on the back of the card and the appearance of the word Void on it (for Visa Electron, Visa, Maestro, MasterCard cards) or the word “Invalid” (for BELKARD cards) may serve as grounds for denial of service. In this case, experts advise contacting the bank for a new card.

The cashier has the right to refuse payment to you. But the same card can be accepted by an ATM or information kiosk - if the magnetic strip is not badly damaged, they told KP at the information center of another commercial bank. - However, if the marking strip is heavily worn, it is best to re-issue the card, as it will soon become unusable anyway.

IMPORTANT!

Many Belarusians still distrust cards. Still, everything is clear with banknotes in your wallet: either they are there or they are not. But what if the card suddenly stopped working for no reason? It seems like there is money, but you can’t use it! Let's figure out why plastic can stop working
