Joel last of us. Detailed analysis of The Last of Us: Part II trailer - will Joel die? Brief plot of the game

The first trailer for the sequel to one of the best video games in history, the legendary The Last of Us was shown at the recent PlayStation Experience a month ago. I didn't have time to cut this tape since I was busy moving and cutting other videos, but now, after the second trailer of Logan, which looks damn similar to the adventures of Joel and Ellie, I broke down and cut this tape to tell you that they showed us in the first trailer The Last of Us 2.

I would like to start by saying that I am a mad fan of the works of the Naughty Dog studio and Uncherted 4 showed us what they would be like next games studios. And given my love for post-apocalypse, horror and the theme of survival, I understand what a masterpiece the second part will be The Last of Us. This video will contain very important plot spoilers for the first part, since without touching on the story of the first part it is difficult to talk about the second.

The trailer opens onto a view of a dense forest. In the game universe, nature has taken precedence over the achievements of civilization and now such gorgeous landscapes are visible almost everywhere. This is what makes adventure in The Last of Us unforgettable. Right from the start, this dense vegetation lets us know that this game will squeeze all the juice out of the PlayStation4 Pro, despite the fact that this video looks like a pre-render- this is not true, Naughty Dog are known for their meticulous attention to in-game details, so this is clearly the game engine, and this teaser itself looks like part of an in-game cutscene.

The singing of birds, crickets and other living creatures adds not only atmosphere, but also life to this jungle. Most likely, the game's ecosystem will become wider and much richer. Then the flawless green picture begins to take on the harsh scars of reality.

Pay attention to these marks on the tree, which was placed in the foreground of this frame for a reason. They look like the mark of a clawed paw. In addition to moss on the tree, you can also notice a fungus, which reminds us of the terrible catastrophe that destroyed civilization.

Then the camera moves away and a trace of a faded civilization appears before our eyes in the form of houses, cars and road signs. On which you can see the logo of the Cicadas, an organization that has enormous influence in the world of the game. Cicadas logo-This is a pretty important detail in this trailer, it signifies their lair. Obviously, they will also play a key role in the plot of the second part.

In case you forgot, at the end of the first part, Joel carried out a bloody massacre in their laboratory, kidnapping Ellie from the operating table.Obviously, in this part the Cicadas will hunt them. However, Ellie, judging by the footage below, intends to do the same.

Then we see the logo of the brilliant studio Naughty Dog, which gave us Uncharted And Crash Bandicoot And Uncharted with Crash inside.By the way, the studio’s first logo did not look so laconic, but it immediately made it clear who was here best developer. And then we are shown Ellie’s shaking hands and I just instantly saw a mirror parallel with Logan.

Well, let’s immediately plunge into speculation; such a tremor may indicate several probable causes. You remember from the first part that Ellie has Immunity to CCI or Cordyceps cerebral infection or in simple words - a fungus that turns people into bloodthirsty monsters. But as scientists said, a fungal growth still formed in her brain, which can lead to various disorders. Possibly tremor-This is a consequence of such a fungal disorder.

This could also indicate psychological trauma that Ellie is finding difficult to cope with. Many have assumed that the mass murder of cicadas, whose corpses are scattered throughout the house, brought her nerves into such a shaky state, but at the time of the game Ellie is already 19 years old, and all her life she has survived in a post-apocalyptic world, it is unlikely that the murders leave scars in her life. her psyche, most likely it’s something else. But I will say more about this a little later.

We see that Ellie knows how to pull herself together and clench her white-knuckled fist, oh yes, I can’t stop enjoying the graphics. She calms down and starts tuning her guitar. We immediately notice the difference from Ellie, whom we are accustomed to from the first part. She got a new tattoo, right where the very bite is located, making it clear that she is immune. You may notice redness on the skin underneath the butterfly tattoo. The tattoo itself is also quite remarkable; its sketch has been circulating on the Internet for a long time.

The drawing is a combination of nature with the theme of change, movement and balance. You can notice that the two branches of the plants look like a black and white Yin Yang sign, meaning movement and the desire for a balance of opposites. And this is not without reason, at the end of the first part we saw how Joel spat on all of humanity in order to save Ellie. This act cannot be clearly called either good or bad. It is the absence of clear extremes that carries the meaning of Yin-Yang.

At the site of the bite there is an image of a butterfly or rather a moth. Both the butterfly and the moth always mean transformation, but if the butterfly symbolizes blossoming and life, then the moth, on the contrary, is a symbol of death. This placement on the arm may refer to physiological changes in Ellie herself, but it is possible that this is only a reminder of the injuries that changed her, most likely the death of Riley. It’s not just that we were introduced to their touching story in the DLC.

Most likely, Ellie got a tattoo on this hand to hide her unusual immunity from prying eyes, because a bite on her hand instantly reveals her identity, and judging by what happened at the end of the first part, she will definitely be hunted. From the mouth of the game producerNeil Druckman, we know that the main theme of the second part will be a mirror image of the first. If in the first part the main theme was Joel's fatherly love for Ellie, which appeared throughout the story, then in this part the theme will be Ellie's hatred.

By the way, it is also noteworthy that the very first teaser of the game appeared back in September, but no one even paid attention to it. A drawing of Ellie’s hand, with plants growing from its veins and moths hovering around, has been leaked online. It is noteworthy that in the background you can see tree roots pointing down. That is, it seems that Ellie's hand is underground. The knife in her hand speaks of a hostile attitude and this picture, with its symbolism, already gives us some idea of the synopsis of the game.

Ellie, angry at the loss of someone close to her, as evidenced by the hand pointed underground and the moths, goes in search of retribution, which can be understood by the knife in her hand, and her hatred and anger, along with the fungus in her brain, begin to change her, turning her into a wild one. and an aggressive beast, which the plants in her veins can also symbolize. We can also notice fresh blood on her hands, which means that it was she who carried out the massacre of cicadas in this house.

By the way, pay attention to the house-it looks old and abandoned, so this is definitely not the Cicadas' base, maybe Ellie deliberately put their logo on the sign to lure them into a death trap. But the symbolic Yin-Yang in her tattoo still suggests that she has not become a villain and has not lost her personality, but is fighting her natural essence while keeping herself in control.Playing the guitar can actually be something like meditation.

The song Ellie starts singing- this is a song called Through the Valley young performer Sean James and his bearded band from Arkansas- Shawn James and the Shapeshifters . And such a choice musical accompaniment very symbolic. This song begins with the words of the 4th verse of the biblical psalm number 23."If I Walk Through the Valley of the Shadow of Death". Surely you can remember this verse from the famous song of the old school rapper Coolio- The Gangster's paradise.

Only this song does not repeat the meaning of biblical verses and instead of seeking peace in God's help, it talks about surviving on your own in a world full of destruction and pain.

The lyrics of this song seem to retell the plot of this game:

I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I am not afraid of evil because I am already blind to it,
Common sense and a gun calm me down
After all, I know that I will kill the enemies who come for me.
And I will walk the earth forever and ever.
But I will no longer walk the righteous path because of sin.
I met the man from the hilltop
That he called himself the savior of people, he came to save the world from destruction and pain,
But I said that it is impossible to save the world from itself.
I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I am not afraid of evil, for I am blind to it.
I walk next to a pool that heals my soul but I know- after death my soul is cursed.

Apparently, Joel kept his promise after all.The song, the tattoo, the promo shot, and the overall tone of this trailer already give us a lot of room for speculation about the game's plot. But that's not all.In the next frame we can see the room where Ellie is and there are some interesting details here.Firstly, the posters that cover the walls immediately catch your eye. And there are no less of them behind Ellie’s back.

I've carefully looked at each of them and they don't seem to carry any interesting details, they are just unusual names of rock bands and their albums, but knowing Naughty Dog's love for easter eggs on posters, I still think that one of them carries some symbolism. Namely, the one that hangs on the right wall, closer to the entrance that Joel will approach.

There is a large inscription on the poster- Theseus. If you are familiar with ancient Greek mythology, then you probably remembered the story of the labyrinth of the Minotaur, which I recently recalled in the theory of the TV series Westworld. So, in short: this legend tells about the brave Theseus, who defeated the minotaur and successfully got out of the labyrinth thanks to Ariadne and her thread. The very idea of Ariadne's thread, which helped Theseus find his way, perfectly reflects the concept of cooperative gameplay. And how do you know The Last of Us differs precisely in the presence of a satellite.

Neil Druckman, as part of the presentation of the game's trailer, also said that this time Ellie will be the main playable character. However, about Joeynothing was said, and videos from motion capture sessions of Ashley Johnson, who plays Ellie, appear on the Internet, but for some reason there is still no video of Troy Baker, who gave us Joel.Fans have already begun to build theories around this trailer and judging by one of them-Joel is dead. And in the trailer we only see a hallucination of Ellie. This is evidenced by some of the details in this trailer.

His very appearance looks quite strange, his blurry silhouette appears in the middle of the bright light in the doorway- this scene is similar to the symbolic light at the end of the tunnel, which appears in various religious interpretations of the afterlife.

We are then shown details of Joel's and her clothing, despite the fact that the game takes place in a post-apocalyptic world- looks perfectly clean and does not have the slightest trace of “survival”, Joel’s hands and his gun are also immaculately clean. We never saw his face in the trailer; we were only shown a small part of it, which is also quite strange. The phrase he uttered is also strange- "What are you doing? Do you really want to go through with this?”. And it’s strange in that it’s like Ellie’s voiced thought, who is trying to justify her actions and motivate herself to continue her bloody path. She says she won't stop until she kills every single one of them. Her gaze definitely radiates incredible anger and it even seems like she’s about to cry.

The death of Joel, who became the closest person to her- the perfect motivation for Ellie's bloody revenge. And if he's dead, his appearances could be similar to the Joker's appearances in Arkham Knight- agree, it was a very cool gameplay element. But, to be honest, I don’t want to believe in this theory, since leaking such a plot twist would ruin one of the most emotional moments of the entire game, Naughty Dog can’t spoil it key point in the very first trailer. They most likely want to confuse the audience so that the game exceeds all expectations and gives players many plot surprises.

Perhaps this introduction of Joel was done deliberately to relegate him to the background, since if he were at the center of this trailer, players would unwittingly consider him the main character of this part. However, we can't ignore the fact that there's something wrong with this trailer, it all looks too unrealistic, like the whole guitar playing scene-This is Ellie's fantasy or hallucination. The details also speak about this- for example, Ellie's hairstyle- This is an exact copy of the hairstyle of Tess, who sacrificed herself after being bitten by an infected. Moreover, she was bitten on the neck; you can see that in this place Ellie also has a mark similar to a bite.

Ellie's shirt - this is the same shirt we saw her in best friend Riley, from the add-on Left Behind, Riley also died in front of Ellie’s eyes and hardly anyone could find her shirt. And the window in the room is very similar to the window from the menu of the first part. That is, it’s as if all the details of this scene are like vivid memories or hallucinations. Perhaps a fungus that has grown in Ellie’s brain is the cause of such clouding of reason.

Ellie obviously wants to destroy all the Cicadas, judging by her menacing statement, and Joel's calm tone- may be evidence of the struggle between her two opposites, which is indicated by the Yin-Yang on her hand. But if Joel is alive, then what will be her motivation for retribution?

On one of the in-game posters in Uncharted 4 players might have noticed a rather interesting easter egg. Nand the poster shows a pregnant girl who looks a lot like Ellie. Title American Daughters- American daughters, in tune with the American Dreams comic book series from Dark Horse, it is their logo that appears on this poster. So there is a possibility that Naughty Dog announced it this way new series comics in the universe, telling about what would happen before the second part of the game.

Perhaps Ellie found love and, like Joel, at the beginning of the first part- I lost a very important person.Recent promotional art for the game shows Ellie playing a guitar as soldiers dressed in military uniform approach her.If you look closely, it looks like Ellie is pregnant in this promo shot as well.Pay attention to the batons in the hands of the soldiers, which may indicate that they need Ellie alive.Perhaps the military or the Cicadas got to Ellie and kidnapped her, and the child in her womb became the object of laboratory research. And again I hear someone already clicking on their keyboard while typing a comment “But Ellie is a lesbian! 11! 11!!”. Well, in fact, it’s quite difficult to say exactly about her sexuality, because she kissed Riley at the age of 14- this can just be a way to express your friendly feelings. And no one has canceled bisexual orientation either, so there is no point in referring to this. There is a possibility that during the 5 years of Tommy's quiet life, she met someone with whom she fell in love and with whom she had a child. And this someone could become a victim of the Cicadas, who now have to face the wrath of Ellie.

Some fans have suggested that the gas mask on the heroine of this poster indicates that it is not Ellie, since Ellie is immune, but the gas mask protects not only from cordyceps spores. Yes, there is a possibility that this is her mother, whose story will be told in the American Daughters comic. It is also worth drawing your attention to the similarity of some scenes in this trailer with the debut trailer of the firstparts. It also started with a beautiful green picture. We then saw an abandoned house, a similar window, a bed, a bloody hand and a close-up of feet.True, in that trailer we were shown infected people, but here they only talk about cordyceps as fungal formations on trees.

The trailer ends with Ellie’s phrase, which in the original sounds very interesting: Every last one of them. As if referring to the title of the game- The Last of Us. This may hint at a kind of mirror parallel with the plot of the first part. It would be cool if the second part was called The Last of Them. However part 2 in the title it clearly says that this is a direct continuation and we have to find out what happened after the ending of the first part.

Game name: The Last of Us (“The Last of Us” in Russia is called “The Last of Us”)

Genre: horror, action

Developer: Naughty Dog

Platforms: PS3

Brief plot of the game

The world has been hit by an epidemic. The fungal virus began to infect many people, causing them to mutate and attack other people. During the outbreak of the epidemic, Joel loses his daughter. After which events throw us 20 years into the future. More than 60% of the planet's population either died out or became infected. The survivors now live in quarantine zones, fenced off from the dangerous outside world. The perimeter is controlled by infected and individual groups of bandits.

Joel and his partner Tess are engaged in smuggling and are looking for their shipment of weapons. The head of the Cicada organization, Marlin, has their weapon. Marlin offers them a deal; they will take the girl Ellie to safe place, and in return she will give them their lot. While they were getting to the Cicadas, Tess becomes infected and dies. And Joel finds out that Ellie was bitten, but never became infected, which is why she is so valuable to the Cicadas. After all, it can be used to create a vaccine against a viral fungus.

While Joel and Ellie are searching for the Cicada base, a relationship develops between them. Joel loved Ellie like his own daughter, and she loved him like a father. Having found the Cicada base, Ellie is sent for surgery, but the fungus can only be removed from her brain if the girl dies. Joel does not want this and takes her from the operating room, killing all the Cicadas and Marlin.

When Ellie woke up from anesthesia, he lied to her that there were a lot of people like her with immunity and the Cicadas could not use them to create a vaccine against the fungus, so they no longer needed it, after which he swore to her that this was the complete truth.

Gameplay of the game

We control the player from the 3rd person. In the game, most of the time we control Joel; in some missions we play as Ellie. The game gives a good opportunity for the player to first get used to the game, passing it while hiding from the players behind different covers. We can crouch down and quietly walk around our enemies, go behind their backs and silently kill. Kill enemies with a bow without others noticing and distract their attention by throwing bottles and bricks in the place we need.

You can pass through enemies either silently or by punching your way using various weapons. which we find according to the measure. Pistols, a rifle with the ability to install optics on it, lying pipes and axes allow us to fight enemies both at long distances and completely hand-to-hand.

In the game you can craft your own weapons and improve your hero’s performance, from the character’s health to the speed of creating items. From the various means found, it is possible to create bombs, Molotov cocktails and first aid kits.

The hero was born 1980 - 84, in September, in Texas. He has a brother named .

As a young man, Joel married and had a daughter, Sarah. Immediately after the birth of their daughter, his wife left Miller. Burdened with a daughter, Joel did not have the opportunity to continue his education in college.

They started life in Texas in Austin County. Joel started working in construction to support his family and wanted to start his own business. He played the guitar well and had a large collection of music, as in his youth he wanted to become a singer. Joel often went hiking with his daughter.

Epidemic:

Before the outbreak of the fungal epidemic, 12-year-old Sarah, by the way a football player, gave her father a watch for his birthday. When the epidemic broke out, Joel tried to save his daughter by leaving town with Tommy. After their car was involved in an accident, they went on foot, meeting a soldier on the way who was ordered to kill civilians. Sarah died from loss of blood, and Joel was saved by his brother.

A fungal epidemic has wiped out millions of people, changing their lives forever.

Life of a Mercenary:

Twenty years later, Joel became a smuggler carrying drugs and weapons through the quarantine zone in Boston. Some time after the death of his daughter, Miller became a brutal killer and torturer. He owned almost all types of weapons. He had black hair and a beard. In memory of Sarah, Joel wears the watch she gave him.

Miller met Tess, with whom he began working as a smuggler.

Cases forced the couple to appear beforeQueen of the Cicadas (terror organization). They made an agreement with her. Marlene promised to return the weapons stolen from them in double the amount if they brought a certain “cargo”, a girl named , to the group of “Cicadas” waiting in the Capitol.

Arriving at the Capitol, the mercenaries found a dead group of Cicadas. They fell into the military's trap. Tess was infected and sacrificed herself to give Joel and Ellie a chance to leave and find Tommy, who must know about the Cicada base. Miller promised to fulfill Tess's last request, to bring the girl to her destination.

Travel with Ellie:

Joel took Ellie to his crazy old friend Bill, who had a car in which they left town. Ambushed by thugs, Joel crashes his car.

After that, they met the brothers Henry and the boy Sam, with whom they continued their journey. One morning Sam woke up infected and attacked Ellie. Henry killed his brother and then killed himself.

Soon, Joel and Ellie arrived in Jackson County where he lived with his wife Maria in a small community. Joel admitted to his brother that the girl was immune and asked him to complete the task for him, to bring the girl to the Cicadas. Having learned about this, Ellie rode off on a horse and Miller and his brother follow in her footsteps. He found her in the house reading a book. The mercenary admitted that he was afraid of losing Ellie, like he lost his daughter.

You're right! You are not my daughter! And I'm not your daddy! This is where our paths diverge!

When Joel calmed down, he decided to go with Ellie himself, having learned the location of the Cicada base at the University of Colorado.

When they arrived, the couple learned that the Cicadas had returned to Our Lady of Salt Lake City Hospital.

After getting into a small mess, Joel was injured after falling from the balcony. He lay in serious condition for a long time, and Ellie took care of him.

When Joel woke up, not finding Ellie nearby, he went in search of her. He captured two people and extorted from them the position of the girl, eventually killing the prisoners. Miller found Ellie hacking away at the gang leader, hugging her like his own daughter.

The mercenary led Ellie to her destination in Salt Lake City in the spring.

Marlene was going to get a vaccine against the virus with the help of the girl, but Ellie had to die. Miller was against this. During the journey, Joel began to treat the girl as his daughter whom he had lost.

The mercenary broke into the operating room, killing everyone who tried to extract the vaccine from the girl, including Marlene, taking with him.

Joel lied and swore to the girl when she woke up from anesthesia that there were a lot of such children with immunity and they were of no use.

Together they returned to Tommy, trying to return to normal life.

Number " Games countries”, inside which materials dedicated to the game were found The Last of Us.

The first one is an interview. Natalia Odintsova with creative director Naughty Dog Neil Druckman(below is a condensed version of the article).

IN: Now that you've completed Uncharted 3, what happens to those who were responsible for it? Will they do The Last of US?

ABOUT: ... The creators of Uncharted 3 are now hard at work on downloadable content for multiplayer. As I mentioned, we don't believe in strictly separating teams, so they will collaborate as needed. … We are also actively recruiting new employees to fill certain positions and roles that are currently unfilled.

IN: Why did you decide to develop a new IP for the current generation of consoles and not the next?

ABOUT: We've been working on The Last of Us since around the time Uncharted 2 finished development, and we've been focused on the PS3 from the very beginning. In my opinion, with The Last of Us, our vision is so ambitious and unconventional that we need to implement it on a platform that we know very well. ...

IN: Why did you choose a world inhabited by “zombies” as the setting for a story about survival? And not, say, a country where a conventional war is raging?

ABOUT: We try to make sure everything here is grounded and feels as believable as possible. That's why we don't have classic zombies - Joel and Ellie survive among people and infected people. This setting allows us to write a story that is driven by very real, very relatable character motivations that don't feel contrived. ... What happens when nature begins to reclaim those lands that humans have developed? How does travel change when there are very few working cars and no traffic as such? Questions like these are basic questions of survival, and we are simulating a situation in which they are the focus. ...

IN: How smart are infected monsters? In the trailer, they are separated as they search the house, but it's not clear whether they are capable of more complex behavior. Will it be possible, say, to somehow distract them?

ABOUT: We have been working closely on AI from the very beginning of work on The Last of Us. It's not just the behavior of the infected that's important - we want the tension to remain constant. Human opponents will be able to assess whether they or your character have a better chance: they will take a closer look at the weapon and react accordingly. If you have a gun, they will start to hide and try to come in from the rear. … Infected people allow us to create additional patterns of enemy behavior - both individual and group.

IN: In the trailer, Ellie and Joel exchange glances before Joel shoots the monster. Why did he hesitate? Does this have anything to do with how fungal spores spread?

ABOUT: Well noted! This scene shows that Joel is also capable of feeling fear. She emphasizes the trusting relationship between him and Ellie: Joel can show in the presence of his partner that he is scared. ... However, we did edit the trailer so that each scene contained hints and information about what awaits gamers in the game. ... Ammunition is a great value in the world of The Last of Us. In addition, there were other monsters in the house and the sound of a gunshot would certainly attract them.

IN: In an interview, you once said that games are not yet very good at telling stories. Are there, in your opinion, any conditions that are the key to a good story?

ABOUT: I don’t think so, because a good story can be told in many ways. But in most good stories There's something that resonates with gamers, an idea that excites us all. ... The Last of Us is about the motivations of the main characters and what they must do to survive. … We are trying to have our say about what people are like and how people live. ...

Joel and Ellie in "Gameland"

The second material is a translation of a large preview of the game from the magazine EDGE:

Sic parvis magna”, - written on the ring Nathan Drake V Uncharted from Naughty Dog. “Greatness from small beginnings" New game from the studio The Last of Us, took this statement to heart - it all starts with microscopic spores that once hovered in the air of the Amazon jungle.

These were spores of the cordyceps fungus: they settled on the bullet ant and infected its small body. ...The ant's grim demise was broadcast on the program BBC Planet Earth in 2008, and a year later it was seen by game director Bruce Straley and creative director Neil Druckman. This happened when the developers were looking for new ideas for the game. ... One of the presenter’s remarks especially sank into the hearts of the authors: “ The greater the population of a species, the higher the likelihood that it will be affected by its arch enemy, the cordyceps fungus”.

What would happen if the infection were transmitted to people?? This thought started the game. ... Although the story is about the end of the world, all these monsters and ruins of civilization serve only as a backdrop for interesting relationships between people - and the developers especially focus on this. ...

The Last of Us continues to use motion capture technology from Uncharted: The actors' voices are recorded along with their movements on a specially built sound stage. … “ While working, actors themselves can change the behavior and remarks of the characters - some of the best dialogues and jokes in the game were born this way”. ...

The Last of Us shares an engine with Uncharted 3, but in the engine new game significantly expanded the capabilities of facial animation. “ We have two stages, explains the chief character designer Michael Knowland. - In Uncharted, I think the facial animation jumped very sharply from angry expressions to joyful ones. And this time we will try to convey more nuances of facial expressions”. …

The team’s goal is neither more nor less “ challenge the fucking industry” and develop the plot in games. “ We are trying to say something important about people, about the way we live. Not only about the game world, but also about our world. We, Naughty Dog We are always trying to develop the industry. And it’s very unpleasant to see how journalists and critics praise blockbuster games with a primitive story for their plot, even with excellent gameplay and graphics. We want to set a new height”.

Development details, something about the characters, a mini-interview with voice actor Troy Baker and much more can be found on the pages of the latest issue “ Games Countries”.
