The Order of the Patriotic War, 1st and 2nd degree, was established by the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of May 20, 1942. It was awarded to privates and commanders of the Red Army, NKVD troops and partisan detachments who showed courage, bravery and steadfastness in the battles for the liberation of the Motherland, as well as military personnel who, through their actions, contributed to the success of the operations of the Soviet troops.

This was the first Soviet award that appeared during the Great Patriotic War. This was the first order, which from the moment of its establishment was allowed to remain in the family of the recipient after his death. Until 1977, other orders were subject to return to the state.

During the war, 324,903 people were awarded the Order of the Patriotic War, 1st degree; after the war, about 20 thousand more people. The celebration emblem is a multicolor image of the sign of the Order of the Patriotic War, 1st degree, framed by golden laurel branches. Between the branches there is a gold inscription: “70 YEARS”.

The minting was carried out by the St. Petersburg Mint. This is one of three bimetallic coins with a face value of 10 rubles issued for the Victory Day celebrations in 2015. The emblem drawing was created by the famous heraldic artist Nikolai Ivanovich Ukolov.
