BioWare - Canadian developer computer games, who fell into slavery and, as a result, suffered from periodic scandals and attacks from former fans. The company became especially famous for the scandal after the release of the cult RPG shooter to the masses, when these same masses were outraged by the unclear ending and the draconian policy of the publisher, selling meager additions at indecent prices.

Studio history

The creation of BioWare is a happy and instructive story. It tells the story of three Canadian schoolchildren who studied to become doctors, but at the same time played consoles and indulged in dreams of their own studio. In 1994, the dreams finally took shape into something tangible - the boys decided to start a gaming company, which was realized a year later.

Then it went on and on. Baldur`s Gate 1 and 2, Star Wars: KotOR, world recognition, dozens of awards... Well, then trouble happened: in 2007 the studio was bought by the publishing house, after which BioWare, although it got a lot of money at its disposal, began making projects of dubious quality. The abuse of the DLC release policy also left its mark, leaving users with the feeling that the game was being sold to them piecemeal. On the other hand, EA bosses taught BioWare employees to face any complaints with a brick, so this had little effect on the studio itself.

However, there were exceptions to the rule in the history of the studio. So, it turned out to be a real pearl in the BioWare collection, which is why the guys were forgiven for most of their sins. The series offered fans a win-win option: space, sexy aliens, giant creatures roaming the open spaces, and an epic plot worthy of a film adaptation.

As the series evolved from the first part to the third, the RPG component was increasingly diluted with shootouts with shelters and epic cutscenes, the apogee of which was that very vague ending, which caused fierce hatred of the community towards the scriptwriters. The situation was somewhat corrected by the release of three DLCs with alternative endings, which, however, could not return common sense to the plot.

Flirting with online

BioWare's close relationship with EA could not but end in a large-scale online project. This was supposed to be, however, taking into account the state of the studio and the publishing house itself, the high-profile project ended in perhaps the most epic failure in the history of the company. For a long time, the developers said that they were making another “WoW killer.” In fact, BioWare really succeeded, only with laser swords, poor Jedi robes and even poorer graphics. In any case, the 100 million dollars that were rumored to have been spent on creating the game were not worth it, and by some miracle the project was not closed and managed to be transferred to shareware, on which it nevertheless went, groaning and creaking into a far from bright future.

Today BioWare is trying to correct itself by working on the third part of Dragon Age. Taking into account that the second part turned out to be a failure, there is no point in pinning much hope on the continuation of the series, although the use of the Frostbite 3 engine may add points to the project.
